Completed 40hr course and first-aid; minimum requirement.
substitute teachers
We are always looking for kind, grounded, and reliable individuals to join our on-call list. Substitutes are contacted as needed to cover sick days or emergencies, and are supported by our lead educators when stepping into the program.
term postitions
Occasionally, we may offer short-term or seasonal teaching positions depending on program needs. These are great for educators looking to deepen their experience in outdoor, relationship-based early childhood education.
Substitute educators on our contact list will be notified when term positions become available. Job postings will also be shared on our website and other hiring platforms.

volunteer
why volunteers matter
Volunteers help lower the adult-to-child ratio, which means more opportunities for meaningful interactions, safer outdoor adventures, and deeper connections. Your presence makes a difference; not just in supervision, but in the relationships you build.

Children benefit from seeing a variety of people contribute to their world. Each volunteer brings their own values, experiences, and ways of being, which helps children learn that every person is unique—and that is something to celebrate.

Volunteering is not just about helping, it's about belonging. Whether you're a parent, grandparent, student, or community member, your time spent with us builds relationships between children, families, and each other. We are creating a village where everyone is seen and valued.

Our outdoor-based approach means we're often exploring nature, rain or shine. Volunteers provide an added layer of safety, support, and fun; whether it’s helping children climb over a log, noticing a bird overhead, or watching snowflakes land on outstretched mittens.
expectations
Volunteering at Rain & Root is a shared relationship—built on mutual respect, safety, and the joy of working together to support children. Below, you’ll find what we expect from volunteers, and what you can count on from us in return.
our expectations:
-
Be Respectful
Treat all children and adults with respect. Speak with care, preserve everyone’s dignity, and avoid sarcasm or teasing. Give children the same respect you would offer an adult. -
Support, Don’t Lead
Volunteers assist and participate, while trained staff lead all responses and decision-making. Follow the guidance of staff at all times. -
Be Present & Positive
Avoid self-deprecating talk or language that may model low self-esteem. We encourage a culture of confidence, kindness, and optimism—toward yourself and others. -
Dress for the Day
Wear clothing that is weather-appropriate, safe, and suitable for movement and messy outdoor play. -
Respect Privacy
Do not take photos, videos, or record information about children or the program on personal devices. Maintain confidentiality and uphold each family's privacy.
what you can expect:
-
Training & Mentorship
You’ll receive guidance and orientation suited to your volunteer role. Our staff are here to support and mentor you. -
Supervision & Safety
Volunteers are never left alone with children. Staff are always present to provide direction and ensure safety. -
Ongoing Feedback
You’ll receive thoughtful feedback to help you feel confident, included, and supported in your contributions. -
Community & Belonging
We aim to create a warm and connected atmosphere where you feel like a valued part of our village.
requirements
Minimum age requirement of 16+
vulnerable sector check
-
Volunteers must complete a Vulnerable Sector Check if they wish to be counted in child supervision ratios or if they require hours to be signed off (for school, practicum, or other programs).
-
Volunteers without a Vulnerable Sector Check are welcome, but will not be considered part of ratio and must always be directly supervised.
orientation
-
All volunteers must attend an orientation before beginning, to ensure they understand safety protocols and their role in the program.
ongoing commitment
-
Volunteers are asked to communicate their availability clearly and arrive on time for scheduled sessions.
